My Cousin is a Magical Girl?!

A comic about being your true magical self.

Diaz and his mother moves to LA to live with his aunt and cousins. This is Diaz’s big chance to turn his life around.

New surroundings, new people things will be different. No more ‘Didi the loser’, he’s going to make a name for himself, Diaz is finally going to be popular!

First day in LA he finds himself kidnapped by a monster and needing to be saved by his cousin Mimi aka “Esmerelda the World’s Top Magical Girl” and leader of Team Cloak.

He finally escaped the nickname “Didi the loser” but is being known as “Mimi’s Lil’ Cousin” any better??

Should Diaz make a name for himself? Or just ride Mimi’s wave and just let everyone know…

Mimi the Magical/ Cousin Girl

“As a lover of fantasy, I grew up watching the magical girl genre take America by storm, but over the past 20 years, it’s shown very little improvement depicting to it’s target audience (young girls and young adult women) that we truly ARE magical.

In fact a lot of it’s tropes and character designs have done a lot more harm that good, and so I wanted to change that.

Magical girls are girls first, and magical second, people with problems and thoughts, who are more than just one personality type. The smart cute girl. The tough sweetheart, the stoic leader that charms the crowd.

And for black and brown girls and boys everywhere, we don’t even get the proper chance to see ourselves as magical girls. “My Cousin is a Magical Girl?!” is motivated in changing that.” -Anna ‘Middnite’ Richardson

“The idea of My Cousin is a Magical Girl literally came to us as we were walking one day. Anna had drawn this random picture for “Mer-May” and I really loved it.

I love the colors , the setting and I found my creative brain weaving an entire world from just this one picture.

With “Mahou-Shou-June” the following month, we decided to add magical girls to the story. I had made the suggestion of us making his cousin the MG and boom, that’s where we came up with the title. Then Diaz and Mimi were born.

As we begin to come up with more and more ideas, MCMG became this deconstructed magical girl story revolving around a diverse cast of black and brown characters.” – Anderson ‘Neph’ Richardson

Esmerelda isn’t the only Magical Girl in our story!

She has a star studded team whom we would love for you to meet!

Esmerelda ``Mimi`` Santana-Reyes (17)

“The number one magical girl, Esmerelda holds the record for being a magical girl for the longest amount of time. Being chosen at the unbelievable age of 12. (Most girls don’t become MG’s until 14!) Mimi has won the hearts of every girl and boy around the world with her charismatic attitude and flashy moves on the battlefield! She is the fearless leader of Team Cloak, currently the second best team in the entire world.”

Esmerelda is extremely determined and dedicated. Always seeing a task to completion. Her persistence can be found a bit annoying by some as she usually doesn’t take no for an answer.

Ever since she was a child she has always loved performing on stage – thanks to the support of her mother- and being a magical girl has not changed her wanting to pursue an acting career once she graduates.

Enkarna Dominguez (16)

“The team’s protector, but do not let her position fool you. Enkarna is as short tempered as they come. Voted second most popular (next to Mimi) of Team Cloak, everyone loves Enkarna for her scowl and devil-may-care attitude. Who said the healer has to be nice? Or supportive??”

Enkarna is complex to say the least, she is so concerned with how her friends and family will perceive her that she refuses to open up to her teammates. Despite accomplishing what most girls dream of, she is unable to embrace that fact.

She might be adored by her fans, but Enkarna is the weakest member of Team Cloak. Enkarna uses her fame and fortune as a magical girl to support her community.  She is extremely supportive and loyal to her family and friends.

Kamari Young (16)

“Destruction users are usually the “bad girls” on the team but Kamari is maybe the nicest girl you’ll ever meet! She wields complete control over her ice powers and once won MVP at the annual International Magical Girl Tournament! Her positive, can-do attitude has made her runner up for becoming Team Cloak’s next leader once Mimi steps down. We can’t wait to see what this young lady will accomplish in the future!”

Kamari struggles with being herself, for as long as she can remember she has always done whatever she could to make her parents proud. Her parents manage every single thing about her life as a magical girl and try to make into a carbon copy of Esmerelda.

Despite her parents’ constant meddling, Kamari still enjoys being a magical girl. Being up high in the sky on her broom is the only time she feels truly free. Kamari is intelligent, jokeful but can be a bit hot-headed and mean spirited.

She is always getting into arguments and butting heads with her teammate Enkarna, who she admittedly despises.

Mia Robinson (15)

“Mia is the most colorful, fashion forward magical girl you’ll ever meet! Voted best dressed in 20xx, her smile and colorful hair illuminates any battlefield she graces. Most illusion users never get a chance to stand out among the crowd, but we think Mia has the style and energy to lead a new legacy of the Sister Generation!”

Mia is an extremely talented and gifted young lady, she dabbles in all different mediums of art and loves to experience new things. She is usually full of energy and very positive.

She struggles with school subjects like math and science, but loves and excels in classes where her teachers utilize unorthodox methods of teaching. She cannot sit still for too long and has a strong support group in her family and friends.

Chelsea Pasang (15)

“Chelsea is the “buffer” of Team Cloak, her shy persona has many of the team’s fans refer to her as a “wall flower.” Little is known about the team’s 5th member other than she’s a young lady of few words. We hope she will learn more about this enigma in her second year as a magical girl.”

Chelsea is talkative and very competitive. She loves to compete in track & field and sports where she doesn’t have to perform on a team. She is full of confidence and enthusiasm, but whenever she’s on a team it’s a complete contrast of her normal self.

Chelsea becomes quiet and constantly doubts herself. She becomes terribly afraid of letting her teammates down. Due to her overthinking, it causes her to make mistakes on the battlefield.

Diaz ``Didi`` Santana (14)

“Q: We got to sit down and speak to the youngest contestant of this tournament. A 13 year old boy from a small town in Colorado. Diaz Sanata, if you and your team win this prize money, what will you spend it on?

A: I’d spend it on getting my mommy out of debt!”

Diaz wants nothing more than to be popular and have a girlfriend. Growing up in a small town where everyone knew each other, he felt like he would always be seen as the same kid from his elementary years.

He wanted a change and he feels as if he can start anew after moving to LA. Diaz is kind and skilled at playing video games. His mother influenced his current love for Rockabilly.
